Lupita Nyong’o Channels Inspiration to Frida Kahlo as She lights up Wakanda premiere in a custom dress for Black Panther.
Lupita Nyong’o arrived at the Mexico City, Mexico premiere of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” on Nov. 9, wearing a black dress and a red coat.
Nyong’o wore an elegant black leather dress with a red silk faille cape and a harness to mark the end of the promotional tour for “Black Panther.” Jonathan Cohen’s custom-designed gown is called “Birth of a Rose” in honor of Nyong’o and his Mexican heritage. This dress was made in collaboration with Evolved by Nature, a biotech company that uses sustainable, bio-based Activated Silk to finish it.
Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist, was the inspiration for the dress. Kahlo’s corsets inspired the leather harness that she used to support herself. It was made with brass buckles in rose- and thorn-shaped shapes. In the spirit of sustainability, the floral appliques were made from leather remnants. Nyong’o was appointed brand ambassador for De Beers in Oct. She wore diamond jewelry from the brand. The pieces included a choker, a three-line bracelet, diamond stud earrings, two rings, and diamond stud earrings. Black strappy, heeled sandals completed her look.
The actress collaborated with Micaela Erlanger (her go-to stylist), whose clients included Susan Kelechi Watson and Meryl Streep.
Nyong’o was a makeup artist with Dana Delaney. She gave Nyong’o dark vamp-style lips and wing-tip eyes. Vernon Francois was her hairstylist.
The sequel to 2018’s Black Panther, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” was directed by Ryan Coogler. Along with newcomers Tenoch Huerta and Michaela Collins, the sequel stars Angela Bassett, Winston Duke and Letitia Wright. The movie will debut in theaters on Nov. 11.
