Over 7 years of experience in fashion designer clothing, I am often asked for, how to wear it, which trends to follow and what is out of fashion.
I love fashion primarily for its ability to express my feelings and communicate with the world. For me, the most important thing is to wear what you like and what makes your feel good.
I’ve learned some tricks, tips, and hacks over the years. They help me buy or put together outfits in the morning.
How To Design Your Clothes?
You will need to start by learning the basics of designing clothes. Although you don’t have to be an expert in the art of designing clothes, it is essential to convey your vision visually. To get ideas, you can start by looking at the designs of others. A fashion design or drawing class might be an option.
After you have learned how to draw, you will need to know how you can sew. Even if you do not sew the pieces together, learning the basics of sewing is essential. It will be much easier to learn about different fabrics, stabilizers, and other accessories when designing your clothes. For beginners, there are many free patterns online.
Designer Clothing Tips (By Marc Jacobs)
Learn From The Greats
Professional fashion designers can benefit from learning the history of fashion and clothes design to generate new ideas and innovation. Fashion trends are cyclical. Looks from the past have inspired many of the hottest fashion trends. Fashion and haute couture have many icons. Marc suggests exploring the work of trailblazers such as Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Halston, and Rei Kawakubo.
Design For Different Markets
Marc suggests that you design for multiple markets until you find the one that suits you. This includes lingerie and sportswear, as well as knitwear and leisure gear. Marc built a brand and focused on womenswear. He then expanded his business into childrenswear, menswear, and accessories. It can be daunting to start your fashion career with no one focus. However, this exploratory process will help you make the right decision for your future. Marc says, “I believe that experiencing something and being involved in it and trying to find out if it’s right for you is the best way of finding out if it is.”
Your “voice” Will Naturally Come Out
It is essential to have your voice throughout your career. However, being too specific can lead to feeling trapped and uninspired. It can be frustrating for young fashion designers to identify the themes and trends that will stay consistent throughout their careers. Marc states, “I’m still finding myself.” Marc says, “When I look back, I see these common themes.” Marc didn’t create his clothing line with these themes in mind. He let them manifest naturally as he made the clothes that spoke to him.
Inspiration Is Everywhere
Marc says, “For fashion to have a purpose and a life, it must be lived.” “I always keep my eyes open while walking or driving and look out the window. “I believe that life is inspiring.” Fashion is not just about the clothes you wear. It is also the story and how it is worn. Keep your sketchbook handy in your everyday life if you want to be a fashion designer. Pay attention to the clothing people wear. What does this tell you about your customers’ wants and needs? You can capture the inspirations you make by taking a picture, sketching in your sketchbook, or writing a note. These observations could lead to great design ideas for clothing items.

Reduce the number of clothes you don’t like or can’t often wear, and organize your wardrobe so you only have what you love. Your clothes should be simple to give you the energy and motivation to tackle your more challenging issues.
The most important thing to remember about personal style and fashion are that you are a customer. Fashion is here to work to fit you, not to work to fit you into fashion! – (By Hernandez)
