Fashion lovers know that many of the early 2000s fashion trends will be back on Fashion Week runways at brands.
Although I still love throwback photos, regardless of how cringe-worthy my poses and outfits may have been, we all suffered a lot from the fashion trends of the early 2000s. Many of the fashion trends we loved, such as the Juicy Couture tracksuits or our favorite True Religion jeans, have fallen from grace since then.
But remember to keep an eye out for these trends. It makes sense, considering how popular specific trends from the ’90s have been. Modern-day It-girls such as Devon Lee Carlson and Bella Hadid have worn halter dresses and handkerchief skirts. The early aughts design is still robust, even though the new versions are updated with modern details.
Let’s go back in time and revisit the daring trends we thought were the coolest between 2000 and 2010. These were the items we begged our mothers to get us. It doesn’t matter if you’d wear these pieces today. Sometimes it’s just fun taking a trip down fashion memory lane. Click through the gallery to see all the fashion trends you loved back then and those you hate today. Fashion Trends is a good resource to learn more about fashion something or to consider a new idea.
Let’s dive into the 2000s fashion trends and see the best outfits of the decade.
Bubble Dresses
Celebrities wearing bubble dresses on the red carpet bring back memories of middle school. Although I don’t know why these gathered, tucked-under hemmed dresses were ever fashionable; I’m glad they’re gone.
Culottes
They may be called gauchos, high-waters, or even gauchos. Essentially, they’re wide-legged capris. A pair of these capris from 2015-2021 would have been considered unfashionable, but they are now fashionable. A flowing pant that hits the mid-calf now is considered fantastic and whimsical.
Slip Skirts
It’s giving manic-pixie dreams girl Amanda Bynes in What a Girl Wants and leftover Chinese food in the fridge because she is quirky. Slip skirts will help you channel your chaotic cool girl.
Velour Tracksuits
Velveteen tracksuits were an unexplainable phenomenon in the 2000s. They were absurdly ridiculous, but everyone seemed to be aware of their popularity. One still recalls the Mean Girls era. Juicy Couture’s status symbol is still evident in the resurgence and popularity of the monochromatic tracksuit. Sincere respect Juicy Couture for such a long-lasting style.
Rimless sunglasses
Light and rimless sunnies are making a comeback, including those with little logos or butterflies on the sides. You can go all ’00s with monochromatic looks and stick to one color from head to toe.
Skinny Jeans
Your jeans had to have a painted-on level of skinny in the early aughts. If you wanted to look cool, your jeans had to be printed or come in a fun color.
Statement Tees
This is my personal favorite. Wear shirts with the words “MILF In Training” or “I’m A Virgin!” Britney Spears is the queen of baby tees and snarky tanks. Reading First Lady Biden could be an excellent way to improve your knowledge or form a fashion perspective.
Recently, Gigi Hadid wore a “lol ur nu zayn malik” shirt to refer to her boyfriend, while wild child Cara Delevingne wore one that said, “Twerking, it’s not a crime.”
Hair Clips
These hair accessories are not going out of fashion but are still in style. These simple accessories can add style to any outfit, whether you choose more elaborate, artisanal adornments such as Olivia and Tyra, or the classic small plastic butterfly clips.
Emo/Bieber Hair
These shaggy hairstyles were probably a result of the popularity of pop-punk in the middle decade and Vans Warped Tour. The popularity of Justin Bieber’s 2008 debut made this style a cultural icon. The shaggy, heavy, bangs-heavy hairstyle became a cultural icon and was immortalized on Bieber’s wax statue (invariably, one of many). Bieber cut his hair and adopted the basic undercut coif, a time-honored tradition in which a boy becomes a slightly older man.
Kitten Heels
While I could go on and on about platforms, there’s something to be said for a smaller heel. A kitten’s heel is both delicate and powerful. A pair of kitten heels is a boss move. It can be worn with a suit or casual jeans.
Cargo Pants
Ask this fashion editor, and you will find that cargo pants are not in style. Everyone loves pockets, and the more, the better. You might have worn cargo in the early aughts with sweatbands or skater shoes. Modernized silhouettes like cropped tops or fitted bodysuits give this style a modern twist.
Trucker Hats
It’s a pretty random trend. The trucker hat’s mesh paneling is very reminiscent of the early 2000s. Add pink highlights to your look with a Von Dutch cap, DC skater shoes, and a Sidekick. You’re ready to have a great time with your friends.
Collarless Leather Jackets
The collarless biker jacket is the punk sister of the ’90s schoolboy blazer. You don’t need the sexy abs of Carmen Electra or the low-than-average jeans. The modern moto jacket is more casual and easy-going than the 1990s model. It may be a little harder to find a white jacket nowadays unless you replace the leather with tweed/cotton, which will look like Ms. Electra.
Bandage Dresses
You’ll find a picture of Serena Van Der Woodsen wearing a Herve Leger gown if you search for “bandage dress” within the dictionary. You might be able to, but not really. These skirts and dresses were all the rage in the 2000s. Herve Leger & Law Roach have recently collaborated to create a Resort 2023 collection.
Vests
The 2000s were, admittedly, a very toxic period for women’s beauty standards. You get the idea. We can’t go back in that direction. But! This decade’s redeeming feature was that fashionable women experimented with menswear and menswear-inspired looks. Vests are a perfect example. Wear one today with matching suits or as a standalone.
Baguette Bags
When it comes to purses, there is a Goldilocks standard. There are many that are too large and too small. We had too many of them in our closets. A small-to-medium baguette will fit perfectly under your shoulder. It’s just right.
Mini Skirts
Applause! Yes, mini skirts! They’re everybody’s favorite. Shania Twain sang “Man!” so beautifully. A short skirt is feminine in every way, according to Shania Twain’s song “Man!” All leg and sex appeal.
2000s Fashion FAQs
Light wash bootcut jeans, cargo pants, classic rock t-shirts, fitted cowboy shirts, henleys, and polos with popped collars were all options. The decade’s middle was defined by the newest “it” items like Juicy Couture tracksuits and Von Dutch trucker caps.
It was a time when flip phones, Juicy Couture tracksuits, and tiny dogs were the norm. Low-rise jeans were popular for highlighting Torsos. UGG boots were also fashionable throughout the year. Popcorn tops could be itchy, but we wore them everywhere.
There were many hairstyles in the 2000s. The lustrous bob was trendy, as well as ultra-long, pin-straight, and glossy cuts. Take a look at Famous Designers if you’re interested in learning more fashion or in new ways of thinking.
The first half of the 2000s saw long curly hairstyles, such as Debra Messing’s in “Will and Grace,” which featured long, straight curls with long layers and shoulder-length curls.
Pop music was at its peak. In 2000, pop music was in a perfect place. Britney Spears was the most famous pop star in the world, even though the charts were filled with boy band songs (Backstreet Boys, Westlife) and high-energy disco (Steps).
In the 2000s, mockumentary and documentary films like March of the Penguins and Super Size Me, Borat, and Surf’s Up were very popular. Fahrenheit 9/11, a documentary by Michael Moore, was the most successful of all time. Online movies became increasingly popular, and digital cinema was born.
Few other decades can boast such great activities for teens as MSN drama, lots of skating, Avril Lavigne, and the cultural gem of Mean Girls. The 00s were a great decade for teens. There was no WKD, internet access was expected, and smartphones started offering cameras for selfies.
In the 2000s, choppy layers and wispy hair were all the rage. Spears was one of the stars who knew how to achieve this look.
Final Thoughts
It was a tumultuous period, full of excessive layering and maximalism. Now, Y2K fashion has become more popular than ever. Although they say you should not look back if that isn’t your desired direction, this sentiment doesn’t hold in fashion. Trends are cyclical; that’s the one thing we know for sure. We can now choose which aspects of the decade we should bring into the modern age, as time has disassociated us from our cringe 2000-2009 selves. Are whale tails acceptable? It’s better not. Dippin’ Dots? Yes. Whether you want to become more fashion, Grunge Outfits is for you!
